The syllabus and textbook for both the exams will remain the same, GSHSEB said in a notification. The board had passed a resolution in 2019 to introduce two different levels for the Class 10 mathematics exam and a committee had been formed for review.
“The committee submitted its report keeping in view the new National Education Policy and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) decision to conduct two separate mathematics tests in 2020 exams. Based on the committee’s recommendations, GSHSEB has decided to conduct two separate mathematics exams for Gujarat schools,” said sources in GSHSEB.

About 27 ago years ago, two separate exams were conducted for Class 10 board exams for schools affiliated to GSHSEB, before it was decided to hold a common mathematics test from 1994, sources added.

“While this year students of Class 10 were given mass promotion due to Covid-19 situation in the state, annually, about 4 lakh students fail in mathematics and in a majority of cases the students discontinue their academic studies,” said sources.

Students who do not wish to pursue further education after Class 10 in the science field, can opt for Basic Mathematics for the board exams in 2022.

Candidates who opt for Basic Mathematics will not be able to take up Class 11 in the science stream. However, if a student has a rethink on pursuing Class 11 in science after clearing Class 10 with Basic Mathematics, he can do so after clearing it in Class 10 supplementary board exams, said sources.
